The Difference Between a Catapult and a Trebuchet
The trebuchet, a subset of the catapult, differs primarily
in its motive force.
Catapult vs Trebuchet
The stone throwing catapult (Figure 1) was an ancient invention powered
by the torsion of a bundle of twisted cord or horsehair known as skein,
as shown in Figure 2.
The hinged counterweight trebuchet (Figure 3) was a more recent medieval
development powered by gravity or, more specifically, a stone or earth
filled cabinet known as a counterweight, as shown in Figure 4.
