El Vado Auto Court

Opened in 1937, the El Vado Court, with 32 one-story, adobe units, some with covered carports, quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest accommodations on the U.S. Highway 66.

Its style was a blend of Pueblo Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, and it featured amenities such as a cantina, swimming pool, and a large outdoor courtyard.

The motel was a popular destination for the rich and famous, including Hollywood celebrities who would visit Albuquerque to film westerns. Many notable guests stayed at the motel including actor John Wayne, singer Roy Orbison, and former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

In the 1950s, with the introduction of the interstate highway system, the El Vado Court Motel began to decline in business. By the 1970s, the motel had changed owners several time and the property fell into disrepair.
